Western Governors University Announces Troops to Teachers Scholarships

(Salt Lake City-July.18, 2006)   Western Governors University ( is offering supplemental $1,500 scholarships to students participating in Troops to Teachers and Spouse to Teachers programs managed through the Department of Education and Department of Defense by Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES). Bachelor and master degree programs are offered by WGU's Teachers College.

WGU will allow recipients to apply $300 of the scholarship money per six month term at WGU, renewable up to five terms. These scholarships will allow current or former military personnel to begin new careers, utilize their knowledge and experience in the classroom, and have a positive impact on our nation's young people.

Getting a degree at WGU is convenient and accessible since WGU is a fully-accredited online university, which is competency-based. WGU students earn their degrees by demonstrating their competency and skills in various disciplines by taking a series of carefully designed assessments. Degrees are earned at the student's own pace, at times and places that are convenient to them.

Troops to Teachers National Director John Gantz is pleased about the opportunity. "I think this shows the willingness of WGU to work with our military people to help them transition into teaching as a new career. Lowering the cost is certainly going to be an advantage."

Regional Director Joe Morgan, of Mountain West Troops to Teachers, says, "The employment opportunities in public education have never been better and the undergraduate licensing and master degree programs at WGU are a perfect match for our applicants to enter the teaching profession."

Student Scott Alan Winter, a WGU Master of Arts in Teaching candidate from Portland, Oregon, says,"I selected WGU for several reasons: It was affordable-I could afford to use my GI bill without going to extra expense. It was also convenient. I could go to school when I was not working--at 3 am or 3 pm depending on my schedule. And finally, I knew that WGU was regionally accredited where some other online schools aren't. My wife, who graduated from Washington State University with a Masters in Education, has told me more than once that this is as difficult and has as much quality as her education."

The Spouses to Teachers Program is only available to registered spouses earning a teacher certification in one of the following 14 pilot states - California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Virginia, Kansas, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Louisiana, North Carolina and South Carolina.
