Resources for Starting a New Work-From-Home Career
by Kelli Brewer

Working from home is a perfect solution for people who want to support their families while having more flexibility in their schedule. Whether you strive to be self employed or want to launch a new career as a remote employee for an established company, there are many ways to turn your dreams into a reality. Below, find helpful resources that will help you establish your own business or get started as a remote worker.

Matching Your Skills and Interests

When launching a work-from-home career, you’ll want to think about how your skills and credentials can help you excel. These tips can help you choose a career path that works for you.

  • If you have experience as a writer, tutor or sales rep, there are many job opportunities.
  • You can also find success putting your creative skills to work if you’re an artist.
  • If you are good with kids, becoming a professional babysitter is a viable option as well.
  • There are many free courses you can take online to gain skills and credentials.
  • Degrees and certificates can be earned online through accredited universities.

Resources for Veterans and Military Spouses

There are many special career and training opportunities for veterans, current military members and their spouses. Whatever your interests are, these resources can help you excel in your career.

  • V-Wise is a training program for entrepreneurial women veterans and military spouses.
  • Veterans Business Outreach Centers (VBOCs) also help vets and their spouses.
  • If you’re a military spouse, take advantage of scholarships that can help you obtain a degree or professional license.

Setting up the Perfect Home Office

Whether you jump straight into a work-from-home career or spend time building up credentials first, it’s best to have a workspace set aside.

  • Start with a desk. Portable desks, standing desks and fold-up desks are great options.
  • Get other home office basics such as storage solutions, a good chair and proper lighting.
  • Make sure your internet connection is fast enough to work from home.
  • Consider installing a landline cordless phone to keep work calls separate.

Financial Help for Your Work-From-Home Career

Being self-employed is often a challenge when it comes to financing your career. These resources can help.

Working from home is a dream job for many people, and for good reason. When you work as a remote employee or independent contractor, it’s easier to remain flexible while earning an income to support your family. When starting your path, make sure you have the skills and training to stand out from the competition. Setting up a home office will also help you keep your work life separate and help you stay on track with your career.
